Caption: The '11-inch' (28 cm) cyclotron, built by Ernest Lawrence at Berkeley, California, in 1932. The second of Lawrence's cyclotrons, it accelerated protons to over 1 MeV. The protons originated from a radioactive source at the centre of the cyclotron & then circled round within the hollow chamber, divided into 2 D-shaped hemispheres; as they crossed the gaps between the two Ds, they were accelerated by an electric field. The protons were held within the chamber by a magnetic field, but spiralled outwards as they gained energy until they finally emerged at 1 MeV or more.
