Caption: Patricia Elizabeth Ruth Cladis (born 1937), Canadian-US physicist. Born in Shanghai, she married George Cladis in 1962. She has worked in Canada, the USA, and France, specializing in the physics of liquid crystals. She was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1983. Her awards include the 1996 Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Prize. Here, she is speaking at a colloquium at the Loomis Laboratory of Physics, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The paper being read is: 'Pattern formation at the Traveling Twist Grain Boundary Smectic A Interface'. Photographed on 21 April 1995.
