Caption: Marianne Mayer (1933-2005), future US astronomer, as a baby. Marianne's parents were German-US nuclear physicist Maria Mayer (1906-1972, nee Goeppert) and Joseph Edward Mayer (1904-1983), both working at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, USA, at the time. Marianne's mother would later receive a share of the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics for her work in the 1940s on nuclear shell structure. Marianne's younger brother Peter was born in 1938. Marianne went on to a career in astronomical research and in 1959 married Swiss-born US astrophysicist Donat G. Wentzel (1934-2013).
