Caption: Sergei and Cecilia Gaposchkin, US astronomers. Russian-US astronomer Sergei Illarionovich Gaposchkin (1889-1984) with British astronomer Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979). They married in 1934 and had three children. As Cecilia Payne, she carried out fundamental work on the structure of the Sun, making the key observation that the element hydrogen was the most abundant component of the Sun. Cecilia and Sergei worked together on a survey of variable stars. In 1977, Payne-Gaposchkin received the Henry Norris Russell Prize. Photographed in 1979 at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Mexico City, Mexico.
