Caption: Melba Newell Phillips (1907-2004 and Robert Navarez Little (1913-1986), US physicists and educators, in front of the Lomonosov Moscow State University Main Building, Moscow, USSR, in November 1983 during the AAPT (American Association of Physics Teachers) Russia-China tour. Phillips carried out her doctoral research under J. Robert Oppenheimer, leading to the Oppenheimer-Phillips effect (1935) concerning deuteron-induced nuclear reactions. Phillips went on to leading roles as an educator. She also worked in Beijing after her retirement in 1972. Little studied fast neutron scattering from heavy elements, and also led efforts in physics education in the USA and abroad.
