Caption: Heinz and Doris Wilsdorf, German-US materials scientists. Heinz Gerhard Friedrich Wilsdorf (1917-2000, left) and Doris Wilsdorf (1922-2010, nee Kuhlmann, centre) were both born in Germany. They had met in Gottingen, Germany, married in London in 1950, and started their family in South Africa. They moved to the USA in 1956, and both joined the University of Virginia, USA, in 1963. Doris was a professor of engineering physics, then a full Professor of Applied Science from 1966. Heinz led the newly-formed Department of Materials Science. In 2006, Wilsdorf Hall at the university was dedicated in their honour. Photograph from General Motors Corporation.
