Caption: Shirley Ann Jackson (born 1946), US physicist and university administrator. Jackson, at the time one of only a few African-American students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduated in 1968. She gained her PhD and carried out research in subatomic physics in the USA and Europe. Her later research was on semiconductor physics. She was Chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) from 1995 to 1999. Since 1999, she has been President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She received the Vannevar Bush Award in 2007. She is married to fellow physicist Morris A. Washington. Photograph from the Brooks/Glogau Studio.
