Caption: Elizabeth Rebecca Laird (1874-1969), Canadian physicist. Laird studied physics at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1896. After postgraduate work, she studied in Berlin with Max Planck and Emil Warburg. On her return to the USA, she earned her doctorate from Bryn Mawr College (1901) for her work on spectroscopy and magnetism. She spent most of her career as professor and head of the Physics Department at Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts, USA. She retired in 1940, later working on wartime research from 1943, retiring again in 1953. This photograph is thought to have been taken in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA.
