Caption: Edith Quimby (1891-1982, nee Hinkley), US medical physicist. Quimby graduated in 1912 with a degree in mathematics and physics from Whitman College, Washington state, USA. She married in 1915, while studying at the University of California, Berkeley. She and her husband moved to New York City in 1919. Starting at the Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases, she forged a career in medical physics, studying the effects of radiation on the human body. In 1941, she joined Cornell University Medical College, becoming full professor there in 1950. She retired in 1960. Photograph from the Center for the American History of Radiology.
