Caption: Elizabeth Rebecca Laird (1874-1969), Canadian physicist. Laird's early studies were in Berlin with Max Planck and Emil Warburg. She earned her doctorate from Bryn Mawr College (1901) for her work on spectroscopy and magnetism. In 1901, she joined the Physics Department at Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts, USA. She became professor and head of the department in 1904. She retired in 1940, later working on wartime research from 1943, retiring again in 1953. Photographed in an academic gown in the Reading Room of the library in the Physics-Chemistry Building, Shattuck Hall, Mount Holyoke College.
