Caption: Elizabeth Rebecca Laird (1874-1969), Canadian physicist. Laird studied physics at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1896. After postgraduate work, she studied in Berlin with Max Planck and Emil Warburg. She earned her doctorate from Bryn Mawr College (1901) for her work on spectroscopy and magnetism. In 1901, she joined the Physics Department at Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts, USA. She became professor and head of the department in 1904. She retired in 1940, later working on wartime research from 1943, retiring again in 1953. Here, she is in her laboratory at Mount Holyoke College in around 1934.
