Caption: Edith Quimby (1891-1982, nee Hinkley), US medical physicist, handling equipment in 1955 at the hospital of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, New York City, USA. In 1912, Quimby graduated from Whitman College, Washington state, USA. She married in 1915, while studying at the University of California, Berkeley. She and her husband moved to New York City in 1919. At the Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases, she began a career in medical physics, studying the effects of radiation on the human body. In 1941, she joined Cornell University Medical College, becoming full professor there in 1950. She retired in 1960. Photographed on 5 May 1955.
