Caption: Gold nanostars. Coloured transmission electron micrographs (TEMs) of star-shaped gold nanoparticles. Such nanoparticles have a number of potential uses. One application is in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy, where the nanoparticles are used to amplify signals from trace molecules in a solution. Star-shaped nanoparticles have been shown to deliver stronger signals than other nanoparticle shapes. SERS can be used to diagnose diseases and detect pollutants and pathogens. Another application is targeted drug delivery. The increased surface are of the star-shaped nanoparticles allows more drug to be attached and therefore delivered to the target cell.
