Caption: Hertha Sponer's nitrogen apparatus. German physicist Hertha Dorothea Elisabeth Sponer-Franck (1895-1968, nee Sponer) studied at the University of Tubingen, and then at the University of Gottingen. A pioneer for women in science, she worked on quantum and molecular physics. Her work in the 1920s included what is now called the Birge-Sponer method for determining dissociation energies. Her papers included 'Stimulation Potential of Band-Spectrum of Nitrogen' (1925) and 'Nitrogen Absorption Bands' (1927). The early work on nitrogen was carried out both at the University of California, Berkeley, USA, and also in Germany in Gottingen.
