Caption: Large Altazimuth Telescope mirror. Engineers supervising the polishing and refurbishing of a mirror for the BTA 6-metre telescope (Bolshoi Teleskop Azimutalnyi, or Large Altazimuth Telescope). This telescope, at the SAO observatory in Russia's Caucasus Mountains, began operations in 1975. Problems with the optics led to the replacement of the original mirrors. Plans to refurbish and re-install one of the original mirrors began in 2007, due for completion in 2013. Eight millimetres of glass were removed during polishing of the 42-ton mirror. Photographed on 8 June 2012, at the Lytkarino Optical Glass Factory, Lytkarino, Moscow region, Russia.
