Caption: Hieroglyphics at The Temple of Horus at Edfu. This temple dates from the Ptolemaic period of Ancient Egypt, and was built between 237 and 57 BC. It was dedicated to the Ancient Egyptian god Horus. Hieroglyphics is a system of pictorial writing invented in Egypt around 3000 BC. The symbols may represent the objects they depict but usually stand for a sound or group of sounds.
