Caption: Radiation warning sign, Chernobyl. Close-up of a radiation warning sign inside the exclusion zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Ukraine. On 26th April 1986, reactor number 4 (seen here) went out of control, leading to meltdown and an explosion. Around 1000 square kilometres of land were directly contaminated by radioactive fall-out. Here, the dosimeter is reading a level of radiation that is almost twice as high as the average permissible exposure level for nuclear industry workers.
