Caption: George Stibitz. Portrait of George Robert Stibitz (1904-95), American computer scientist. Stibitz gained a doctorate in mathematical physics from Cornell University and began work for Bell Telephone Laboratories. In 1937 he utilised telephone relays to design the first binary calculator. In 1939 Stibitz built a more complicated 'complex number calculator'. Though reliable and easy to use, it could not be programmed and did not have a memory. Stibitz later designed program-controlled calculators but these became redundant due to the development of electronic digital computers. Photographed in 1937.
