Caption: Portrait of Josiah Wedgwood (1730-95), British master potter and industrialist. Born into an established family of potters, Josiah founded his own business at the age of 29. Ten years later, he built a larger factory and a village to house its workers. He became influential in the industrial community, forming companies for the construction of new roads and canals. His improvements in pottery making allowed affordable but high quality pieces to be mass produced, making his fortune. He also indulged in the very finest porcelain and ceramics, producing work of the highest quality and artistic merit of the age. By his death, his estate was worth over half a million pounds.
