Caption: Earth compared to exoplanets, cutaway artworks. The Earth is at left. At centre is a continental planet (mostly land). At right is a water planet (mostly ocean). The cutaway segments show the interior structure of the planets, with convection currents (white arrows) in the magma driving plate tectonics and other geological processes. Convection currents in the Earth's nickel-iron core give rise to its magnetic field. Exoplanets with solid cores may not have magnetic fields.
