Caption: False-colour X-ray of a prosthetic knee joint following implant surgery. In this image, the larger femoral component of the metal joint appears as the pink arrow-shaped feature. Knee joint replacement surgery is performed on older patients whose knees are severely affected by pain & lack of movement due to osteo- or rheumatoid arthritis. The operation is not normally performed on younger patients because it does not restore a full range of movements & the prosthesis has a limited tolerance to stress. Post-operative outlook is limited by stress fractures in the metal & plastic components & the tendency of the cement to loosen.
