Caption: Three metal ear trumpets, two in plated brass and one in gilt brass with a fretted grille. These were used to aid those with difficulties in hearing. Sound waves enter the large domed end of the device and become amplified as they pass along the narrow tube and into the earpiece. The tip of the earpiece is placed in the ear canal of the user, the amplification of the sound makes it easier to hear. These devices are English and date from around 1860.
