Caption: Hallmarked silver ear trumpet. Ear trumpets were used to aid those with difficulties in hearing. Sound waves enter the wide end of the device and become amplified as they pass along the tube to the earpiece. The tip of the earpiece is placed in the ear canal of the user, amplification of the sound makes it easier to hear. This piece is English and dates from 1812.
