Caption: Collection of six English ear trumpets. Ear trumpets were used to aid those with difficulties in hearing. Sound waves enter the wide end and become amplified as they pass along the narrow tube and into the earpiece. The tip of the earpiece is placed in the ear canal of the user, amplification of the sound makes it easier to hear. These date from between 1860 and 1910, they are made from brass, celluloid and silver plate.
