Caption: Clubbing in a finger. A swollen and inflamed finger due to a condition known as clubbing. The tips of the fingers and toes become thickened & broadened due to swelling behind the root of the nail. Clubbing is often associated with certain chronic lung diseases, including bronchiectasis, lung cancer, fibrosing alveolitis & lung abscess; and with heart abnormalities that result in cyanosis (bluish complexion due to lack of blood). Clubbing is also associated with the inflammatory bowel diseases Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. Occasionally clubbing is seen in patients with cirrhosis of the liver. Very rarely it is inherited.
