Caption: The ear of a person suffering from acute otitis externa; inflammation of the outer ear (pinna) and the canal leading down to the eardrum (external auditory meatus). Otitis externa can be caused by both fungal and bacterial infections and is more common in swimmers ("swimmer's ear") and those with eczma and diabetes. Symptoms include itching, pain, a slight discharge and temporary deafness.
