Caption: Pear fruit stone cells. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through the fruit of a pear (Pyrus sp.) tree, showing stone cell clusters, or sclereids. Amongst the parenchyma cells (blue) are patches of stone cells (sclereid, grit, red) that give support to the soft tissue of the pear. The thick cellulose walls of the sclereids are impregnated with lignin, the main component of wood. Magnification: x37, when printed 10 cm high.
