Caption: Orchid mycorrhiza. Light micrograph of a section through the root of a bird's nest orchid (Neottia nidus-avis), showing cells of endotrophic mycorrhiza. Mycorrhiza are a symbiotic association between a fungus and the roots of a vascular plant. Here, the roots of the plant have been invaded with the filamentous hyphae (green) the fungus, through the epidermis and outer cortex. The hyphae coil up in the outer layer of the cortex of the root. In orchids such as Neottia sp., which lack chlorophyll completely, the plant must obtain all the essential nutrients, including carbohydrates, from the fungus. Magnification: x37, when printed 10 cm wide.
