Caption: Tea leaf. Light micrograph of a section through the midrib of a tea (Camellia sinensis) leaf. This is a typical mesophyte leaf with an upper and lower epidermis (blue), thick cuticle (pink) and typical stomata (pores) that occur only on the lower surface. Under the upper epidermis there are three layers of palisade mesophyll (red) with chloroplasts and beneath this a spongy mesophyll (blue-green) with chloroplasts and large inter-cellular spaces. In the middle of the lamina are small leaf veins (red-blue) a single large vein (the horseshoe midrib), consisting of a ring of thick-walled sclerenchyma (red-blue). Within the ring the top is the xylem (red) with large tracheids. Under the xylem is the phloem with sieve tubes (small dark blue cells).
