Caption: Light micrograph of a section through the midrib of a leaf from a cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) tree. This is a typical mesophyte leaf with an upper and lower epidermis (violet) with a thick cuticle (violet) and typical stomata (pores), found only on the lower surface. Under the upper epidermis are two layers of palisade mesophyll (brown-violet) with chloroplasts. Beneath this is a spongy mesophyll (light violet) with chloroplasts and large inter-cellular spaces. In the middle of the lamina are small leaf veins (red-blue) and a single large vein (the horseshoe midrib), consisting of a ring of thin-walled sclerenchyma (brown). Within the ring is the phloem, with sieve tubes (small dark violet cells), whilst under the ring is the xylem (white/violet)
