Caption: Medlar leaf. Light micrograph of a section through the midrib of a leaf from a medlar (Mespilus germanica) plant. This is a typical mesophyte leaf with an upper and lower epidermis (red), with trichomes (hairs), a thick cuticle (blue) and typical stomata (pores), found only on the lower surface. Under the upper epidermis are two layers of palisade mesophyll (red), with chloroplasts. Beneath this is a spongy mesophyll (blue-red) with chloroplasts and large intercellular spaces. In the middle of the lamina are small leaf veins (red-blue) and a single large vein (the horseshoe midrib) with thick-walled collenchyma (black-blue) and a ring of parenchyma (blue).
