Caption: Thornapple seed. Light micrograph of a section through a sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seed. The outer testa and pericarp have been removed from the seed. There is no endosperm because all the nutrients have been absorbed into the embryo. There are two cotyledons with a slit (white, vertical) along three-quarters of the embryo. The cells are full of nutrients, such as starch grains and proteins. At the bottom of the slit is the plumule (triangular, violet) and the apical meristem. Magnification: x5, when printed 10 centimetres high.
