Caption: Cuckoo-pint flower stalk. Light micrograph of a section through a spadix (spike inflorescence) from a cuckoo-pint (Arum maculatum) plant. The spadix grows at a great rate and at a temperature of 44 degrees Celsius. It is therefore full of starch, used to power this immense growth. In the top chamber there are rings of male flowers (red). In the bottom of spadix are rings of female flowers containing ovules (red). Magnification: x4, when printed 10 centimetres high.
