Light micrograph of a section through pollen grains (blue, round) on the stigma of a California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) flower, showing pollen tubes (dark lines coming from them. Each of these long tubes carries the male gamete cells of its pollen grain down the plant's style and into the ovary where it they fertilise the female gamete cells in the ovule (egg cell). Magnification: x37, when printed 10 centimetres high.
