Caption: Sycamore leaf bud. Light micrograph of a section through a leaf bud from a sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) tree. The outer layer of the bud consists of eight, thick scale leaves (brown-red, bracts) bearing trichomes (hairs). Underneath bracts, the inner foliage leaves are large and the lamina (dark orange) is corrugated, with a large vein (midrib) and several small veins (circular, light orange). The leaves become smaller towards the centre. When the sap rises in the spring, the scale leaves fall off and the inner foliage leaves take up water and expand. Magnification: x5, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
