Caption: Herring ovary. Light micrograph of a section through the ovary of an Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus), showing ripe (large, pink) and unripe (smaller, pink) stocks of eggs. The eggs measure around 1.2 to 1.8 mm across. The large eggs have an outer membrane surrounding them (red) and a north pole (with the germ on the top) containing the living protoplasm (dark purple) and a nucleus (round, red), from which the embryo will grow. The vegetative pole (90 percent of the egg) contains the yellow yolk with oil droplets (red) and nutrients for the embryo. Magnification: x4, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
