Caption: Mackerel gills. Light micrograph of a section through gills from a mackerel (Scomber scombrus). Water flows into the fishes mouth across the three pharyngeal clefts (right), then out over the gill lamellae. The heart pumps blood to the gills through arteries. The thin feather-like gill lamellae (pink) provide a massive surface area to extract oxygen from the water and pass it into the arterial blood, as well as passing carbon dioxide into the water, that. The bottoms of the branchial arches are made of bone, which supports the gill lamellae and muscles. Magnification: x5, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
