Caption: Mackerel ovary. Light micrograph of a section through an ovary from a mackerel (Scomber scombrus), showing ripe eggs (large, red) and unripe stocks of small to large eggs (purple). The eggs measure around 1.2 to 1.8 mm across. The large eggs have an outer membrane (red) and a north pole (with the germ on the top), containing the living protoplasm (dark purple) and the nucleus (round, red), which will later develop into the embryo. The vegetative pole (90 percent of the egg) contains the yellow yolk with oil droplets (red) and nutrients for the embryo. Magnification: x7, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
