Caption: Everest mountain group, Himalayas relief map. The inset (top) shows the classic pyramid shape of the summit of Everest at left, seen from the Nepalese (south) side on the south-western approach. At right, separated from Everest (8848 metres) by a saddle (the South Col, 7906 metres), is the peak of Lhotse (8516 metres). Below Lohtse is the cirque of the Western Cwm, with ice and snow here feeding the Khumbu Icefall and Khumbu Glacier (not seen). Many summit attempts depart from camps on the South Col. The ridge in the foreground is Everest's West Ridge. Everest is directly below the inset, at centre in the portion of the Himalayas shown here.
