Caption: Sputnik 2 monitoring. Controllers operating equipment at one of the desks at the Soviet Ministry of Communications outside Moscow, Russia. This site monitored the flight of the second Soviet satellite, Sputnik 2. This was the second spacecraft to orbit the Earth, doing so on 3 November 1957. It carried the dog Laika into space, with the dog dying a few hours after launch. The spacecraft burnt up on re-entry on 14 April 1958, after 162 days in orbit. Photographed on 3 November 1957.
