Caption: Soviet polar research. Soviet engineer in the floating polar research station Severny Polyus-28. The first Severny Polyus research station was built in 1937. They are temporary bases designed to allow study of the Arctic Ocean through a whole year while drifting on an ice floe. The second one was established in 1950, with regular stations from 1954 (Severny Polyus-3) to 1991 (Severny Polyus-31). The series restarted in 2003 with Severny Polyus-32. Severny Polyus is Russian for North Pole. Photographed in 1987.
