Caption: Prehistoric rock carvings in Gobustan, Azerbaijan. The earliest of these rock carvings, discovered at the foot of the mountains Beyukdash, Kichikdash and Djingirdag in the 1930s, date from up to 10,000 years ago. Thousands of such petroglyphs have been found in the area, which was made a national park (Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape) and national historical landmark in 1966. In 2007, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Photographed in June 1966.
