This is a rare complication of rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that causes progressive joint and cartilage destruction. The nodules can cause an irregular heart beat (arrhythmia), heart valve disease or congestive heart failure. All of which can be fatal. Magnification: x60 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
