Caption: Scalp ringworm. Light micrograph of a section through a scalp infected with a dermatophyte fungus, a condition known as tinea capitis, or scalp ringworm. Changes seen here include a proliferation of keratin (toughened protein, red) on the skin's surface and the infiltration of neutrophil white blood cells (dark purple). A wide variety of fungi can cause tinea infections. Magnification: x60 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Human tissue.
