Caption: Arthritis of the foot. X-ray of the left foot of a 60 year old female with severe osteoarthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, at the base of the big toe. In a healthy individual there would be a clear space between the two bones of the joint. Osteoarthritis results in the loss of cartilage between the joint. The healing process leads to the growth of bone in place of the cartilage, causing pain, stiffness and loss of mobility. Treatment is with the surgical replacement of the joint.
