Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Mumps. Swollen gland of a six year old boy with mumps parotitis, a viral infection of the parotid salivary gland (located beneath the ear). Mumps is most common in children and young teenagers, although the advent of the MMR vaccine has greatly reduced its incidence. Symptoms of mumps usually begin with fever, headache and earache, followed by the swelling of the infected gland, which becomes very tender. Complications of mumps can include meningitis, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), swelling of the ovaries or testes and deafness. Treatment is aimed at relieving the symptoms and can include anti-inflammatory drugs. This infection occurred even though the boy had been vaccinated with MMR twice.
