Caption: Thin section of fossil, lithified star coral photographed in transmitted polarised light, actual dimension 30 x 40 mm. Star corals are invertebrate marine organisms, class Anthozoa and phylum Cnidaria, and their skeleton typically has a radial, star-like makeup, in details varying among the species. They form reefs in water of shallow to moderate depth, in many warm seas but most abundant in Caribbean waters. Fossils are known to date back to the Jurassic period.
