This image was produced as part of research into new materials, in this case studying an ordered pillar array (green) for applications into advanced porous media to aid separating chemicals and other materials. Silicon pillar arrays with embedded silica nanospheres (brown) were developed to increase the surface area. This research was carried out at the Center for Nanophase Materials Science at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA. This image was published in 2012.
