Caption: Palaeontological sediment analysis. Close-up of a sample of sediment being sorted under a microscope to find microscopic fossils. This research is being carried out by French palaeontologist Joane Pouech (C019/9816). The sediment is from the Cherves de Cognac site, near Cherves-Richemont, Charente, south-western France. Pouech wrote her doctoral thesis on fossils found in this area. The fossils date from the Berriasian stage (140 million to 145 million years ago) of the Early Cretaceous. Photographed in 2010 at a palaeontology laboratory in Lyon, France.
