Caption: Salt intake. Measuring spoons showing 1.5 teaspoons of table salt (sodium chloride). A survey conducted in the USA between 2003 and 2010 showed that most Americans consumed this amount of salt in their diet each day, nearly 3430 milligrams. This exceeds the maximum daily sodium intake recommended (2300 milligrams as of 2013). Excessive salt consumption can put people at risk of developing high blood pressure, the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes.
